Meet Robert, the visionary CEO of SigTel—a leading DVBE company. Under his dynamic leadership, SigTel has forged a strategic partnership with eco-alpha, delivering exceptional facility management services while championing supplier diversity. In this spotlight series, Robert shares his insights on the pivotal role of DVBEs in driving inclusive business practices and fostering robust industry relationships. His forward-thinking approach not only strengthens his organization's impact but also sets a new standard for diversity and excellence in the built environment.
Robert Morrow’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and transformation. As the CEO of SigTel, a leading DVBE company, his journey from military service to becoming a successful business owner exemplifies the power of discipline and innovation in overcoming obstacles.
From Service to Success
Robert’s path began in 1979 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army’s Signal Corps where he learned discipline, leadership, and the importance of attention to detail. Over nine years, he honed expertise in communications and cabling through assignments both overseas and stateside. After his military tenure, Robert transitioned into the cable TV industry—first as an installer, then as a service technician.
In 1995, with a California State Contractor’s license in hand, he launched his own business, expanding into telephone systems, fiber optic cabling, and outside plant construction. His military foundation not only equipped him with a robust technical skill set but also instilled a mindset that would carry him through the challenges of entrepreneurship.
“I am very grateful to be able to serve my country honorably and learn a trade that would carry me through my real-life experiences in the business world and the rest is history,” he reflects.
Empowering Diversity in Business
Robert is a staunch advocate for the unique strengths that Disabled Veteran Business Enterprises (DVBEs) bring to the marketplace. He believes the qualities honed in military service—discipline, strategic thinking, adaptability, and a relentless work ethic—are invaluable in the business world.
However, those skills are only a starting-point when overcoming the hurdles DVBEs face in the business world.
“Many DVBEs struggle to secure the funding needed to start or scale their businesses due to limited credit history or financial resources post-service”.
A lack of awareness limits the DVBE community as well. He says, “Many DVBEs are unaware of the full range of resources, grants, and contract opportunities available to them”. Additionally, breaking into established markets can also be difficult, especially in industries where strong relationships and reputation play a crucial role.
A Partnership Built on Trust and Persistence with Eco-Alpha
“Eco-Alpha’s ability to work with contractors and suppliers likely stems from their strategic focus on building long-term relationships, effective communication, and their commitment to shared goals”.
Robert’s relationship with Eco-Alpha began during the challenging early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when he first connected with Uzoma Okoro, President and COO of Eco-Alpha. This initial conversation laid the groundwork for a lasting partnership. In early 2024, Eco-Alpha’s Founder and CEO, Dr. Melanie Okoro, reached out to SigTel to collaborate on a major project with the California Department of General Services.
“I’m deeply grateful for Eco-Alpha’s continued belief in me and my business—they never gave up, and that commitment has truly made a difference in our partnership,” Robert shares.
Today, SigTel serves as a key subcontractor, providing facilities management services while paving the way for future collaborative ventures.
Fostering a Culture of Collaboration and Growth
Beyond project execution, Robert actively supports organizations like Eco-Alpha by offering advisory support, facilitating compliance, and leveraging his extensive network. His goal is to help navigate the complex landscape of government contracts and certifications, ensuring both his company and partners like Eco-Alpha can thrive. He envisions a future where collaborations evolve into deep, strategic alliances that extend beyond individual projects—alliances that drive innovation, sustainability, and community impact.
Driving Change Through Supplier Diversity
“Supplier diversity programs, like Eco-Alpha's, are essential because they foster innovation, open up new markets, and provide a broader range of solutions by bringing in different perspectives and ideas. Working with Eco-Alpha has positively impacted SigTel by providing access to new networks and capabilities.”
For Robert, supplier diversity programs are more than just initiatives—they are catalysts for change. Such programs foster innovation, open new markets, and infuse the business world with fresh perspectives. “Working with diverse contractors has allowed SigTel to expand our service offerings and tap into new networks. It’s a win-win situation that benefits our business, our clients, and our communities,” he remarks. Recent legislative measures in California, aimed at ensuring fair opportunities for minority-owned businesses, have been transformative. These policies not only level the playing field but also have far-reaching ripple effects, spurring local economic growth and strengthening community ties.
Looking Ahead
Robert is optimistic about the future, envisioning opportunities where collaborations grow deeper, with businesses forging long-term partnerships and joint ventures that combine technical expertise with strategic vision. He calls on prime vendors and industry leaders to offer more mentorship, financial support, and inclusive policies that empower disabled veteran-owned businesses. The partnership with DVBEs holds tremendous potential as it serves as an avenue for diverse voices to come together to solve challenges. The goal is to build a future where every business, regardless of its background, can succeed.
Eco-Alpha’s commitment to collaboration and meaningful partnerships continues to open doors, build stronger communities, and create a more inclusive future for everyone. We are thrilled to be a part of Robert’s “Service to Success” story and we look forward to greater collaborations in the future.
